Saskatoon Team Contest

Walter Murray's Math Club is proud to be hosting Saskatoon's first ever YXE Team Math Contest! This is a competition available to all elementary and high school students who currently attend a Saskatoon school. You and your team of 4 will be put to a test of wits against the other teams in an attempt to prove yourselves as the best in Saskatoon. Prizes will be available for the winners. If you do not yet have a team, you can sign up as an individual and you will be assigned a team on the day of the contest.

When/where will this contest take place?

The contest will take place on December 13th, 2025. Please note that this is on a Saturday. It will be in room 2C02 of the University of Saskatchewan's Engineering building.

Who can participate?

Any elementary school or high school student in Saskatoon is eligible to participate in this contest. It does not matter if you are in the public system or catholic system. Please note, however, that some of the problems will contain high school level mathematics and mathematical concepts, and will therefore not be suitable to most elementary school students.

What will the day of the competition look like?

The contest will take place the entire day. Here is the approximate schedule:

9:30	Doors open, check-in begins
10:00	Welcoming speech, various icebreaker games
11:00	Guest speaker Jacek Szmigielski
12:00	Lunch - Students can bring their own lunch or buy two slices of pizza and a pop for $5. Please note that Place Riel is closed.
1:00-4:00	Contest begins. This consists of 3 parts (see below)
4:00-4:30	Awards ceremony and wrap up

These are the 3 sections of the contest:

A teamwork portion where you will work together with your teammates on a list of 20 problems.
An individual section where each team member will try to do a selection of 10 problems separately.
A high paced relay section where each member of your team will answer a question based on the number they recieve from the person behind them.

The morning will consist of the games and talks, while the afternoon will contain the actual contest. So, if you can't make it in the morning, don't worry! Just let us know by email so we can plan around it.

What kinds of problems are on a math contest?

If you've never written a math contest before, the problems will be different than the type of math you are used to seeing in school. These problems will need outside-the-box thinking, using the math you have learned in school to tackle problems you've never seen before. Here is an example of such a problem:

There are 100 lockers in a row, all closed. You make 100 passes: on the first pass, you toggle every locker. On the second pass, you toggle every 2nd locker. On the third pass, every 3rd locker… and so on, until the 100th pass, when you toggle only the 100th locker. How many lockers are open at the end?

How do I sign up and get a team?

Competitors can sign up for the event here.
As this is a team competition, you will need a team of 4 to participate. However, if you do not have a full team of 4, don't worry! You can still sign up as a partial team with your friends (2 or 3) or sign up as a solo participant. These groups will be filled on the day of the contest as best as possible.
